A low-maintenance deck still needs cleaning and occasional checks. The difference is that modern PVC and composite deck boards do not need the recurring staining or sealing that wood boards do.

What work goes away?
With the PVC and composite products we typically recommend, you don’t schedule a new coat of stain every few years to protect the deck boards. You also don’t have to sand weathered wood boards to prepare them for that stain. Color and finish are part of the manufactured decking system rather than a coating you apply after installation.
That is a significant change for a busy homeowner. It doesn’t mean the whole outdoor space can be ignored indefinitely.
What work remains?

Don’t choose from a tiny online color swatch. Look at full-size samples outdoors, in sun and shade, against your home’s siding and trim. Ask how picture framing, stairs, fascia, and railings will be finished. Those details affect how the deck looks every day as much as the field boards do.
The boards are only part of a long-lasting deck
A premium deck board cannot compensate for a poorly planned structure. Joist spacing, beam and post layout, footings, flashing at the house, water management, and stair construction all matter. On our projects, we plan those details for the actual site and selected products rather than treating the finish boards as the entire deck.
If an existing wood deck is being replaced, we also assess the framing. Reusing a frame should be a condition-based decision, not an assumption made from a photo of the top surface.
